Ryan S. Huss, MD

Was awarded scholarships for three years beginning in 2002.

"After receiving my first Friends of 440 Scholarship award as a freshman at Florida State University, I transferred to Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA to complete my bachelor's degree work in sunny California. At Stanford, I attained a degree in Human Biology with a focus in Human Performance, pursued a pre-medical course curriculum, and conducted research in the Stanford Department of Neurosurgery studying cancer stem cells in Glioblastoma Multiforme.

After graduating in 2005, I continued my research in Cancer Biology in the lab of Dr. Douglas Hanahan at UC-San Francisco, after which I returned to Stanford in the fall of 2006 to begin my MD. As a medical student at Stanford, I participated in the Stanford BioDesign program where I focused on intravascular cardiac medical device development, and completed a one-year Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) fellowship with the NIH. As an HHMI fellow, I studied the biology of particle induced bone degradation that occurs due to implantation of hip and knee prosthetics (commonly known as hip and knee replacements). This project resulted in a first author publication in Arthritis & Rheumatism in December, 2010.

Since graduating medical school, I completed a summer internship with the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in Palo Alto, CA, where I worked closely with the Healthcare Payor and Providers practice, and in January 2012 began my current position as Senior Medical Fellow at Scanadu, Inc., a medical device startup based out of Mountain View, CA which is aiming to build the first medical Tricorder (yes, inspired by Star Trek for you Trekkies . . . check out our website).

I recently started my residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, which officially makes me a Stanford "lifer." My new wife, a veterinarian, and new dog, named "Bowden" after a certain legendary Florida State football coach, visit my family in Florida frequently. My mother continues to work as a nurse case manager for a large insurance group and my father is a retired attorney and state mediator specializing in workers' compensation.

I'll never be able to thank Friends of 440 enough for their support of my relentless pursuit of my dreams, which get bigger by the day."
